The term "Haint" is a rich and complex part of the folklore and cultural heritage of the southern United States, and plays a significant role in the region's popular imagination today.
Haint seems to have originated with the Gullah Geechee culture of South Carolina and it is often associated with beliefs about the supernatural and the afterlife, and may be used to describe a wide range of paranormal phenomena, including apparitions, poltergeists, and other manifestations of the spirit world.
One common application of Haint in the south is when you paint your porch ceiling "Haint Blue" which is a shade that will confuse a Haint, making them think there is water (which they cannot cross) and they will move along to another, unprotected place. Aside from use of this blue-green hue, other things are said to protect a home from Haints, such as the use of "Bottle Trees" Where Haints might get lost, or jars of pennies which Haints are inclined to attempt to count.
Although all may not agree on the nature and tendencies of a Haint, as indeed, they may not all align with each other, it seems generally agreed upon by the superstitious that you want to keep the Haints away.
